The launch of the Arbroath Smokie Tartan took place on Saturday 6th of April 2005, as part of the Tartan Week celebrations held in Arbroath.

Attended by the Provost Brian Middleton and his wife, Mike Weir MP and Andrew Welsh MSP as well as many other local dignitaries the event, despite the cold, was a great success.

Designed and woven by the Strathmore Woollen Co Ltd, Forfar the tartan has been created to pay homage to the humble Smokie. For many years an important product for local fish merchants it has now been protected from imitation by the European Government.

In celebration of this the tartan has been launched and was specifically designed to reflect the red sandstone of perhaps Arbroath's most famous landmark, The Abbey, the blue and white of the sea which plays a vital part in the lives of the local fish merchants and fisherman, the glow of the smokie which produces the delicate flavour and the golden yellow of the smokies them selves.

We hope that you like our tartan and that it will prove popular with both locals and those perhaps now living elsewhere in the UK and further afield who may have originated from Arbroath or have family connections in the area or even those of you who have enjoyed Smokies in the past and are looking for a souvenir of perhaps a holiday you have enjoyed here in the past.
